Good first draft:
Coal. A long time ago it powered everything. Everything to trains to factories to spinning wheels. It helped buffer the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century. It helped launch the electric era of the 20th century. If we didn't have coal, Asia wouldn't have anything to power its industrial section. Then the Industrial Revolution wouldn't have taken off and the 20th century wouldn't have accessed the electricity that led to early phones and computers. Coal was first formed 300 million years ago. It is the cheapest source of energy in the world.
Coal can be described as a rock. It may not look like much but this rock can help create electricity, power steel production and cement manufacture. Coal is combustible, sedimentary, organic rock. It is black in color and dusty. Coal is a fossil fuel and plentiful. Scientists predict that we have 112 years of coal left. Coal is also a non-renewable resource. Coal reserves are located in India, Asia, China, North America, Africa. The biggest market for coal is Asia. Often trains are used to transport coal. Sometimes barges are used but can't get to places on land. So trains are used.
Coal can be useful but coal isn't the cleanest way to produce energy. Miners, when mining coal, sometimes develop black lung from the coal dust. Mining hurts the land and can damage the surface water. Plus when burned coal releases carbon dioxide,or,CO2 which is a type of greenhouse gas that can harm the air. Mining uses a lot of water that can be used for other things. Mining also kills freshwater streams. Mining explosions kill hundreds of innocent people each year. So coal has quite a lot of cons. We can get past that.
Coal can be used for a lot of things. It may look plain, but it can really power and burn. Coal is definitely useful. But coal can pollute and cause dangerous diseases. Without coal we couldn't really have anything. However, technology is improving to use more eco-friendly forms of energy.
