Introduction

In the past, people used solar technologies in many different ways, but now solar power gets the sunlight to generate electricity and could power up homes, schools, and businesses from solar power plants. These power plants would often be near sunny places or the desert such as the Mojave solar power plant.

New things added to solar power plants.

German researchers made 44.7 percent of the sun’s energy and make into electricity. So, in that case, Germany’s solar power plants could bring a lot of energy to homes. Scientists made solar panels more efficient so, in the future, solar power plants would be more advanced.

Why are solar power plants good and bad.

The bad thing about solar power plants is it can only collect energy when the sun is out. Also, the sunlight is very spread out so a solar power plant can’t take all the energy from the sun. The good thing about solar power plants is it can produce so much clean energy to homes.

Things you might not know about solar power plants

When solar devices were going to be made in 1954, the magazine “New York Times” proclaimed,” The beginning of a new era leading eventually to the realization of one of mankind’s most cherished—the harnessing of the almost limitless energy of the sun for the uses of civilization”. Solar energy is the most used energy source on earth and 173,000 terawatts of solar energy strikes Earth continuously. In the 1960’s, a space industry began to use solar tech to provide aboard space crafts. Also, the Vanguard 1 was the first satellite that was powered by solar cells. Last of all, the Mojave desert has the largest solar power plant and energy project.

Types of solar power plants

There are two types of solar power plants. They are photovoltaic and solar thermal system power plants. There are three different kinds of solar thermal system power plants. They are parabolic troughs, solar power towers, and solar power ponds. There will be two new solar power plants by the end of this year. There is one in Gila, Arizona that is a parabolic plant and a power tower in the Mojave Desert, California.

The plant in Arizona that is called Solana is a parabolic power plant which has parallel rows of parabolic collectors. The reflectors increases the suns energy 30% to 100% more than its normal power. It heats a special type of fluid that is used to heat a super heated steam.

The plant in the Mojava Desert is called Ivanpah. It is a power tower plant. It is a series of three power towers and a field of movable mirrors. It uses light to heat the water in the boiler at the top of the tower. This creates steam that turns a turbine like an ordinary a fossil fuel plant. Power Tower plants can store energy and can operate whenever needed, even after dark and on cloudy days and they are cost effective.
