In order for solar cells to work they need sunlight which carries photons.Once the photons hit the solar cells; the solar cells take the photons energy and creates an electrical current. So in order to create electricity you need a positive current and a negative current. Inside a solar cell there is n-type silicon material that keeps the positive electrons and the p-type keeps the negative electrons.This electrical current is then sent to the device or machine that needs to be powered.
Things that are being used to be powered by sunlight are cars,calculators,and many more. Redondo Union High School(RUHS) is planning to put solar panels over the parking areas to conserve energy and save money. The type of solar cell that Redondo will be using is called a photovoltaic cell. This is the most common cell and provides one of the strongest electrical currents that can be sent throughout the school.
Did you know that solar energy was first discovered in 1839 by a scientist that shined a light on a chemical solution. Scientist first observed the effect in solid material in 1877. It wasn’t until 1954 that the first solar cells were used for powering satellites that are in space. In 2013 solar cells produce 18% of energy from the sunlight falling onto the solar cell.
We all know that solar cells convert energy into electricity but did you know that spacecraft and space stations often use solar panels to generate power. Another interesting fact is that if you covered 10,000 square miles of land in the American Southwest it would make enough power to meet the energy needs of the entire United States! The largest solar power plant in the world is found in the Mojave Desert, USA. Also, Germany has the largest solar electric power plant and has half of the solar resource of the United States.
When people create solar panels they put large numbers of solar cells together. One of the Air Force bases in Nevada has saved $83,000 a MONTH when they switched to use solar energy. Solar energy has been used for a long time. It has been used for 2700 YEARS; in 700BC, glass lenses were used to make fire.
